Al-Zour is a grassroots, mega-scale refinery on Kuwait's southern coast — engineered from the ground up for clean fuels, power-sector supply and export-grade distillates.
Who we are
Al-Zour Refinery sits on the Gulf coast in the Ahmadi Governorate, roughly 90 km south of Kuwait City. It was conceived as the cornerstone of Kuwait's Clean Fuels strategy: a single site large enough to replace high-sulphur fuel oil in the national power grid while producing distillates that meet the strictest international specifications.
Rather than expanding older assets, the complex was built as a grassroots facility. Every unit — crude distillation, hydrotreating, sulphur recovery, utilities and the marine terminal — was designed together, which is why the plant reaches its rated throughput with fewer bottlenecks than a retrofitted refinery of comparable size.
Commissioning ran in phases, with the crude distillation trains brought online one at a time so that operating teams could stabilise each train before the next was started. The complex now runs as a fully integrated refinery with its own storage, power, water treatment and export infrastructure.
What we stand for
Energy security
Domestic power stations depend on a stable, low-sulphur fuel supply. Reliability here is a national obligation, not a commercial preference.
Environmental stewardship
Lower sulphur output, flue-gas treatment and zero liquid discharge are designed into the plant rather than bolted on afterwards.
People and safety
Layered process safeguards, continuous control-room supervision and a large Kuwaiti technical workforce trained on the complex's own systems.
Long-horizon value
The site is planned for petrochemical integration, so today's refining margins support tomorrow's higher-value product slate.
